Murchison Falls National Park also formerly known as Kabalega National Park is Uganda’s largest park and the only park in Northwestern side of the country. This is one of the most visited Uganda safari parks by holidaymakers on wildlife tour.  The surrounding districts around Murchison Falls National Park include Masindi, Kiryandongo, Nwoya and Buliisa.

Murchison Falls National Park is perched along the Albertine Rift valley, Northwestern Uganda. It is 305kms North of Kampala capital city. Originally, it was established as a wildlife reserve in 1926 and later, up-graded into a national park in 1952 which makes one of the oldest parks in Uganda.

Unlike other Uganda safari parks, Murchison Falls National Park is bisected by the Victoria Nile creating the Southern and Northern sections. It takes its name from the powerful Murchison Falls which squeezes itself into a narrow gorge of about 8 meters before it drops off about 43m down.

Murchison Falls National Park expands up to 3840sq.kms of land area and makes up the bigger portion of the vast Murchison Falls Conservation Area. The Murchison Falls Conservation Area is inclusive of other reserves especially Karuma Wildlife Reserve, Bugungu Wildlife and Budongo Forest which is popular for chimpanzee trekking experiences. Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo is enjoyed by visitors in Kaniyo-Pabidi.

Wildlife

These are preferable for wildlife viewing experiences and birding is ideal during the wet season which commences from late March to May and October to November.

Access to Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP) Uganda

By road; if you plan to access the park from the southern gate; drive from Kampala to Masindi about 305kms, approximately 4-5 hours’ drive. From Masindi drive to Kichumbanyobo gate go through Kaniyo-Pabidi forest. The Northern gates start your trip from Kampala/Entebbe via Pakwach route, Karuma Falls bridge then to Chobe, Mubako, Tangi and Wankar gate approximately 260kms.

By air; About 3 airstrips serve Murchison Falls National Park and you take your flight from Entebbe airport or Kajjansi airfield. The airstrips at Murchison Falls include Pakuba airfield to the North, Bugungu airfield to the south and Chobe airfield East of Paraa.
